FAQs

What is a domain name?

A domain name, a series of textual characters that identifies a specific IP address, uniquely identifies a website on the Internet. Domain names locate businesses, organizations, or other entities on the Internet. Domain names are easy to remember, easy to type alternatives to obscure URL's that you receive with free website hosting services. Using a domain name allows you to receive more visitors, less bounced emails, and the chance to make a lasting impression on the Web.

A great benefit of using your domain name is that regardless of how many times you change your access provider, your Email and website address will always remain the same.

Why and when were domain names introduced?

In the beginning there were IP addresses - long, cumbersome strings of numbers that represented computers on the Internet. You had to remember that a string of numbers, such as 199.6.46.3, would take you to a particular website. In 1984, a system was introduced known as DNS (Domain Name System), which translates easy to remember words and phrases (domain names) into IP addresses, saving us the trouble of memorizing all those numbers

Do I need a domain name to have a website?
While a domain name is not necessary to have a website, it is recommended. Whether you are creating a family website or a business website, having a domain name allows your site to be more easily found and remembered.
I don't have a website yet, why should I register a domain now?
Domain names are going at the rate of more than 200,000 a month. Registering your domain name now ensures your ownership of the domain name that may not otherwise be available when you want it. Once registered, that domain name is yours (provided that the registration and renewal fees are paid each year). You can hold onto it, use it, sell it or lease it. DomainIt will store your domain name on our servers free of charge until you are ready to do something with it.
How can I find out if the domain name I want is still available?
DomainIt provides a domain name search engine that can instantly tell you whether or not the name is available. If a domain name is available, you will be given the option to register it. If a domain name is already registered, we offer the option to backorder the domain name, giving you a chance at purchasing it when it expires.
My domain is already taken! What should I do?
DomainIt has partnered with SnapNames, a leader in the domain name aftermarket, to offer you a domain name backorder service. If the domain name that you want is already registered, simply select the backorder option. Your domain name will be monitored and we will attempt to secure if for you as soon as it expires. Our backorder service saves you time and increases your odds of securing the domain name when it expires. If you need a domain name right now, in addition to the backorder service, you could register alternate domains. Consider registering alternate domain name extensions, such as .cc, .to, .co.uk, .biz, .us, etc. Also, try variations of your name, including hyphens.
How can I find out more about country domains (ccTLDs)?
DomainIt offers a huge list of country and alternate domains. From Albania to Yugoslavia, we list them all!
What type of domain names can I register at DomainIt?
You can currently register .com, .net, .org, .biz, and .us domain names at DomainIt.
What characters are allowed in a domain name?
Regardless of the extension, all domain names must follow the same character rules... You can use letters (abc), numbers (123) and dashes/hyphens (---). Spaces are not allowed and the domain can't begin or end with a dash. A little known fact is that you CAN have multiple dashes right next to each other. (e.g. domain--names.com) Opened up a few more possibilities?
I found a domain that has already expired - when can I register it?
In order for an existing domain name to be re-registered by anyone other than the current owner, it must be completely released by the Registry. Unfortunately, at the present time there is not a set schedule for releasing expired domain names. Most domains are released within a few months of their expiration. The best solution is to use our backorder service. As soon as the domain name is released, we will attempt to secure it for you. There is no risk with the backorder service as you only pay if we successfully secure the domain name for you.
How much does it cost to register a domain name?
Each domain name is also subject to an annual maintenance fee which varies depending on the domain/registry (see the registration form for full info). You can use our currency converter to calculate the cost in your home country.
Can I pay by means other than a credit card?
No. At this time we are only able to accept payment by credit card, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and Diner's Club.
How long will it take to register my domain name?
Your domain name is registered in a matter of minutes, provided the registration form is filled out correctly. :)
How can I make sure my registration information is secure?
Your registration is submitted via our secure form. This form encrypts all of your registration information, ensuring the security of your transaction.
What do I get with my domain name registration?
Once DomainIt has successfully registered your domain name, we will then act as technical contact for your domain name as well as providing the two (2) required DNS servers on which to set up and store your domain name. With your domain registration, you will receive free email forwarding and free URL forwarding. Email forwarding is an email address @ your domain name (e.g. bill@microsft.com) that automatically forwards to your existing email account. URL forwarding allows you to forward your new domain name to your existing website. If you're ready to register your domain name, click here.
Once my domain name is registered, can anyone else take it?
Your domain name is registered in your name. So long as it has active DNS entries, all the required fees are paid and it's not in breach of any law, nobody else can either use it or take it without your consent.
What if I misspelled my domain name?
Be VERY careful when registering your domain name. Once you purchase your domain, the order is non-refundable.
How can I register a .in, .ca, or .mx domain through DomainIt?
DomainIt offers a huge list of country and alternate domains. From Albania to Yugoslavia, we list them all! Visit this section for more information on registering specific country extensions (ccTLD's).

My domain name has already expired. Is there any way that I can renew it?
If you have accidentally allowed your domain name to expire, you may still be able to renew it before it is deleted and made available to the public. There is a redemption grace period of 30 days. Please contact us for help in renewing your domain name.
What happens if I don't renew my domain name by the expiration date?
Within 3-14 days after the domain name expires the domain name will be removed from the name servers (DNS) which will interrupt any services such as Email, Website hosting, or URL Forwarding. For certain registries, approximately 30 days after the domain name expires it will enter into a redemption period for approximately 30 days. During the redemption period, you can still renew your domain name, but there is an additional redemption fee of $150.00 USD which includes a one year renewal. If the domain name is not redeemed during the redemption period, the domain name will be deleted by the registry and made available for registration.
What is the redemption period?
For certain registries, approximately 30 days after a domain name expires it goes into what is called the redemption period. The redemption period lasts for approximately 30 days. During this period the domain name can be redeemed by the original registrant for a fee of $150.00 USD which includes a one year renewal. If the domain name is not redeemed it will be deleted by the registry and made available for registration.

Transfers

How do I transfer a domain name?
It's easy to transfer your domain name to DomainIt. Simply go to our transfer page and enter the domain names that you wish to transfer.
How long does it take to transfer a domain name?
Transfers are generally completed within 2-3 days.
How do I transfer my Domain name to another provider?

com/net/org Domains registered before 12/31/99: Approach your chosen provider and fill out their hosting request form. Advise them that you already have a Domain name and that you wish to have it transferred to their servers. Most providers have a ready made template for this purpose and don't charge a transfer fee. Once the transfer request has been sent, both yourself and DomainIt will receive a message from InterNIC asking to either acknowledge or decline the request. So long as all fees have been paid and we've been made aware of the transfer, we acknowledge this message. It generally takes less than 2-3 days. If we were not made aware of the transfer, it is the admin contact's responsibility to acknowledge. com/net/org Domains registered after 1/1/00: Request the following info from your new provider, then contact us. Please send your request from the Email address of the current Administrative Contact (if you've forgotten this address, use our Domain name search engine)

I requested the transfer 4 days ago. Why has my Domain name still not transferred?
In most cases, DomainIt will receive a copy of your registry modification request and we are able to assist if you contact us first. Please note that unless there's a discrepancy in the request, DomainIt is NOT holding up your transfer. For all domain names, the registrant or administrative contact has full control of the domain name and listed information. At DomainIt, we always list our client as both of these contacts to ensure your rightful ownership. If you require our assistance, please contact us with full details (include your Domain name) and we will do our best to assist you.
Why can't I transfer my NEW Domain name to another Registrar?
You can change the DNS at any time by logging into your Account Login. However, per ICANN regulations, you cannot change the Registrar for 60 days following a new registration. After that time, you can request a transfer through the receiving Registrar and we will be notified of the move.

Backorder

What is the domain name backorder service and how does it work?
DomainIt has partnered with SnapNames, a leader in the domain name aftermarket, to offer you a domain name backorder service. If the domain name that you want is already registered, simply select the backorder option. Your domain name will be monitored and we will attempt to secure if for you as soon as it expires. Our backorder service saves you time and increases your odds of securing the domain name when it expires.
How much does it cost to backorder a domain name?
You pay nothing up front to backorder a domain name! There is no risk as you only pay if we successfully secure the domain name for you.

URL Forwarding and IP Pointing

What is URL forwarding and how does it work?
URL Forwarding allows you to redirect or 'point' your domain name to another location. Most often, this is used if you own multiple domain names and want to 'point' them to the same website. It is also useful for websites that use a free website hosting service, but want the convenience of a domain name.
How do I setup URL forwarding?
When you register a domain name with DomainIt, you will receive a free URL forwarding. Once your registration is complete, you will be able to login to your account and setup your website forwarding address. If you would like to setup URL forwarding for a domain name that you already own or would like to setup a cloaked URL forwarding account, please visit our URL forwarding section.
What happens if I have to change my URL?
This is when the URL forwarding is most useful. You simply login to your account and update the URL that you want your domain name forwarded to. It's that easy!
What is a cloaked URL forwarding?
A cloaked domain is similar to regular URL forwarding, except that your URL will never change in the address bar. When you use cloaked URL forwarding, your domainname.com forwards to your actual URL, but yourdomain.com stays in the address bar.
My images don't show up on my cloaked URL forwarding. What is the problem?
You will need to make sure that you are using the full images paths (i.e. http:/www.myhostspace.com/images/mygif.gif rather than /images/mygif.gif).
Why do I want to use meta tags with my cloaked URL forwarding account?

The advantage of using meta tags with your cloaked URL is that you are providing search engines with information about your website when they visit your actual domain name. Meta tags are lines of code at the top of an html page that instruct search engines and give them information about your website. Some basic meta tags include:

<TITLE>Your Site Title Here</TITLE> - This tells Search Engines what the name of your site is. Often times, search engines use these titles for the title of your listing within their search results.
<META NAME='description' CONTENT='Your site description here'> - This gives search engines an idea of what your site is about. Often times, search engines use the description as the description of your listing within their search results.

<META NAME='Keywords' CONTENT='Your site keywords here.'> - This gives search engines an idea of what your site is about.

It is highly recommended that you have the basic meta tags in place when you use a cloaked domain. While these tags are not the sole source of information about your website, they are useful in helping some of the engines determine your placement.

I have my own web server, how do I get my domain name to point to it?
If you currently have a web server for your site, we can point the Domain name to that server's IP address. The domain name will remain on our servers and DomainIt will continue to handle DNS and email forwarding. To change the IP pointing, simply enter in the DNS information of your server or web host in your account login area.
Is there a charge to point my domain to a different IP?
No, there is no charge to point your domain name to your server IP.
Can DomainIt provide me with an IP address?
Although DomainIt assigns each hosted Domain name an IP address, we are not in the business of trading IPs. Contact your local provider for more info.
How long does it take for DNS changes to take effect?
Propagation, the process whereby name servers across the Internet are updated with new information so that they resolve to the proper location after a DNS update, can take between 12-72 hours to complete.

Email FAQ

What is Email Forwarding and how does it work?
Email forwarding allows you to forward your email from one email address to another. For example, email@yourdomain.com could be forwarded to your current email address, giving you the ability to receive all email at one address.
How do I make it appear that email is coming from my domain name email address?
To make it appear as if email is being sent from your alias address, you need to change the 'Reply To' or Return Address (depending on the email software used) to your alias rather than your 'real' email address. You may wish to set up another personality, or account, (again, depending on which software is used) then you can switch from one to the other. Do not change any other mail settings. You will continue to send and receive through your ISP. But with the 'Reply To' changed, it will appear as if the message is coming from your alias at your domain name.
How do spam & virus filters help me?
Our filters help reduce spam and protect your computer from email viruses by catching, filtering, and disposing of spam messages and email viruses before they reach your inbox!
How do I use the spam & virus filters?
To use the spam and virus filters, you simply login into your control panel and turn them on. Your email will now be protected with our spam & virus filters.
What is IMAP support?
IMAP allows you to review message headers, create or delete folders and messages, and search contents remotely without actually downloading your email.
How do I create an email account?
There are several ways for you to get an email account at DomainIt. The first option is to register a domain name. With each registration you receive a free email forwarding account, which allows you to forward email@yourdomain.com to your current email address. If you have a website in addition to email, you can setup website hosting and receive email forwarding and POP email accounts with your hosting plan.
How long does it take for my email to become active?
Your email account will be active immediately.
How can I pick up my email?
You can download your email using our web based mail or using your own email software, including Outlook Express, Outlook, or Eudora. Click the following link to view step by step instructions for your specific email program: Email Setup Guides
What is WebBasedMail and how does it work?
WebBasedMail allows you to send and receive your email from any location with just a browser and an Internet connection! To pick up your email using our WebBasedMail software, simply go to http://www.webbasedmail.com and login with your email address and the password that you chose when you signed up.
How long does it take for the server to forward an email message?
Email aliases are forwarded instantly. As soon as an email message reaches our server addressed to you, it's immediately redirected to the email address you specified in your registration.
How long is my free email forwarding valid?
We will continue to provide free email forwarding for as long as the domain name is on our servers. If a domain name is transferred, service must be set up with the new provider.
What happens if I decide to change my ISP and my personal email address?
That is one of the big advantages of having your own domain name. You@YourDomain will never have to change regardless of your ISP. No need for new business cards or letterhead, simply log in to your account and update the destination email address immediately.

Hosting FAQ

What is website hosting?
Website hosting is a service that allows you to upload and store your site's HTML documents and related files on our web server. Our server then makes the files available on the Internet for viewing by the public.
What are the advantages of using website hosting versus a free hosting service?
There are several advantages to website hosting over free hosting services, with the first being domain names. With website hosting, you have the ability to host your website at your domain name, whereas with free website hosting, you generally have a long website address under the hosting providers name (i.e. http://geocities.com/yourname/...). Often times, free hosting services require their advertising to remain on your website. With website hosting through DomainIt, you control the content on your website! Another big advantage of website hosting is the sizable increase in your disk space and bandwidth. With free hosting services, you typically have limited amounts of disk space and bandwidth. The larger amounts that come with your account allow you to hold more files and receive more visitors to your website. Lastly, with website hosting with DomainIt, you have the ability to increase the functionality of your website with scripts, such as our free CGI scripts, databases and more.
How do I pick a hosting plan?
When picking a website hosting plan, you need to have an idea of what you want to do with your website, plus factor in a bit of room for growth. Is your website large or are you hosting a large number of images and/or videos? If so, you need a package with a larger disk space allocation. Do you expect to receive high volumes of traffic to your website? If so, you need a package that gives you more bandwidth. Do you need CGI, PHP, and MYSQL functionalities? If so, select the plan that includes these features.
Can I upgrade accounts?
Yes, you can upgrade your hosting account at any time. All you need to do is login into your domain account and select the hosting upgrade that you would like.
Can I use Microsoft FrontPage?
You can use FrontPage or any other FTP enabled software to upload your web site. However, you will not be able to use some of the Microsoft features of FrontPage such as forms or counters. This should not be an issue though, because should you need those services you can use the ones provided to you from within your hosting control panel. We have many clients who use FrontPage, and find the forms, counters and other free scripts we provide more than adequate.
Do you have an instant site design tool?
Yes! We offer an instant site design tool at InstantSideDesign.com that includes a free year of website hosting and a free domain name connection to your account. The instant site design tool is easy to use, giving you a professional looking website in just minutes.
Do you offer any website design tools for the regular hosting plans?
No. If you need website design software, you may want to consider our InstantSiteDesign service. In addition to this, there are several options for you to use that have free trials. These include: EditPlus - a more advanced version of 'Notepad'. It allows you to preview a file as an html page before uploading it to your server. CoffeeCup - Offers both an html editor and a visual site designer.
How long does it take for my hosting account to be setup?
Your website hosting account will be setup immediately. You will receive an email confirmation with your login and FTP information after your account is setup. You may not be able to upload files to your account for up to 24 hours due to propagation of your domain.
Can I host multiple websites?
Yes, you can host multiple websites, but you will need to setup a separate website hosting plan for each website.
How do I update my website?
To update your website, you will need an FTP program. There are several great free programs available online, such as CuteFTP and WS_FTP. If you already have an FTP program, you simply FTP into your account and upload your new or updated html files. It's also possible to upload your files using FTP via your browser. Simply type the following address into your browser and it will ask you for the login info: ftp://ftp.yourdomain.com/yourdomain.com. Enter your login details and you're ready to upload!
What do I name the main page of my website?
You can name the individual files whatever you like, but your main page must be called or for it to be the first page people see when they load your website.
How can I transfer my website from another host to DomainIt hosting?
Transferring your website from another host can seem like a daunting process, but we're here to make the move quick and easy. First, make a backup copy of your entire website by downloading all files via your FTP program. Once your new hosting account is setup with DomainIt, you can then FTP your files into your new account. You will also need to update your domain name DNS servers so that they point to your new website location.
Can I track how many people visit my website?
Yes! With your website hosting plan, you will have access to in-depth website statistics including daily visitors, monthly visitors, website referrers, search engine visitors (and the keywords they searched for to find you!), plus much more. How to Configure Your FTP Program

What is an FTP client and how do I use one?

1. What is an FTP client?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. Using an FTP client is a method to upload, download, and manage files on our server.

Technical Information:
FTP is a commonly used protocol for exchanging files over any network that supports the TCP/IP protocol (such as the Internet or an intranet). There are two computers involved in an FTP transfer: a server and a client. The FTP server, running FTP server software, listens on the network for connection requests from other computers. The client computer, running FTP client software, initiates a connection to the server. Once connected, the client can do a number of file manipulation operations such as uploading files to the server, download files from the server, rename or delete files on the server and so on. Virtually every computer platform supports the FTP protocol. This allows any computer connected to a TCP/IP based network to manipulate files on another computer on that network regardless of which operating systems are involved (if the computers permit FTP access). There are many existing FTP client and server programs, and many of these are free.

2. How do I use an FTP client?

If you do not know how to use an FTP client, please use our step by step Setup Guides, as seen on the FAQ page. If you already know how to use an FTP client and are looking for the default settings, they are listed below:

HOST ADDRESS: ftp.yourdomain.com
USERNAME: yourdomain.com
PASSWORD: your password
REMOTE DIRECTORY: /yourdomain.com/html/

Important Notes:
- All regular files should be uploaded to the /html directory
- Name your homepage index.htm and upload to the /html directory
- All cgi scripts should be uploaded to the /cgi-bin directory
- Servers are case sensitive (e.g. imAge.gIF MUST point to a file called imAge.gIF).
- Make sure your FTP program is set to FTP, not SFTP

3. Common FTP Errors

Permission Denied in FTP program: This is because you are not uploading to the correct location. Be sure to add the "remote directory" of yourdomain.com/html/.

Connection Refused: Double check your FTP settings (server/hostname, username, and password). You are not logging in correctly, or the account is not yet setup.

Search Engine Submission FAQ

What is DomainIt's Submit Program and how does it work?
DomainIt's submit program allows your site to be submitted to 1000+ search engines instantly. You simply fill out a form with all of your site data and we do the rest! You will receive a confirmation email when submission is complete.
Why should I submit to 1000+ search engines and directories?
If traffic is important to the success of your site, then it is important to get listed on as many high traffic sites as possible. Some services say you should only submit to the top 10 or 12 search engines and directories. While those top 10 or 12 do account for the majority of the traffic to your site, it will help your site even more to get listed in the other search engines, directories and other site indices. Would you turn away free traffic and more sales? Another benefit is that some search engines now use incoming links to your website as a determining factor in your ranking. By getting your site listed in more places, this may increase your rank in some engines.
What are keywords?
Search engines and directories use keywords to help determine which sites to list in their search results. You should provide several keywords that describe your site content. Ask yourself, 'What would a person looking for my site enter into a search engine?'
Meta Tags: What are they, do I need them, and how do I use them?

It is highly recommended that you have the basic meta tags in place on each of your submitted url's. While these tags are not the sole source of information about your website, they are useful in helping some of the engines determine your placement. Without them, you may not be added to a search engine or you may not rank well in one's that you are added to.

Which search engines do I get submitted to?

It is highly recommended that you have the basic meta tags in place on each of your submitted url's. While these tags are not the sole source of information about your website, they are useful in helping some of the engines determine your placement. Without them, you may not be added to a search engine or you may not rank well in one's that you are added to.

How long does it take to be submitted to search engines and directories?

The time taken for your site to appear varies greatly as each search engine has a different time from for which it adds new submissions. Your site could be added instantly or take several months depending on the engine. The submit pages on most sites will give you an approximation as to how long it will take for your site to appear. Submitting your site to an engine does not guarantee that it will be listed. Some engines review all submissions manually and the administrators can add or reject your submission at his discretion without notice.

It is fair to point out though that not all submissions are added the first time due to the growing number of sites being submitted to Search Engines and Directories. Also note that some search engines are 'specialty' search engines and only allow submissions that are of a particular subject or have a particular domain extension.

Please be aware that we cannot guarantee that your site will be approved by all search engines and directories, nor can we guarantee the position of your site in the results.

Which pages should I submit to search engines and directories?
Ideally your main page should be submitted. It is important to note that your main page needs to contain relevant content information (not just splashy images) if you want to get listed. In addition to your main page, you should consider submitting any page that has unique content that you want users to be able to find without going to your main page first.
How many pages should I submit to search engines and directories?
It depends on the nature of the site. For example, if your site promotes vacations, you may have several different types of vacations featured on their own separate pages. In this case, you would most likely want to submit the specific page for each of these vacations so that users can find them when searching. In order to perform well, each of these pages needs to have unique content and be targeted to the specific vacation (or whatever your page may pertain to).
Why can't I find my site listed on a search engine or directory?
Often times search engines do not list a site on first submission simply due to the volume of submissions they receive. Additional submittals may be required. Another one of the most common reasons for not being listed is that sites do not have proper titles, descriptions, and keywords in place in the meta tags. Be sure that you have these in place to ensure your highest chances of addition during your first submittal.

Please be aware that we cannot guarantee that your site will be approved by all search engines and directories, nor can we guarantee the position of your site in the results.

How do I get listed in search directories?

Some search engines are strictly human edited directories. This means that you have to manually enter your site information and choose an appropriate category for your site to submit it. This information is then reviewed by a human being who decides whether it will be included in the directory or not. These directories include:

Yahoo! - Yahoo charges a $299/year fee to be listed.
Open Directory Project (DMOZ) - Free to be listed.
Looksmart - Charges a 15 cent per click fee.

Should I submit to paid search engines and directories?

Google is arguably the biggest and most popular search engine, and in fact, Yahoo! themselves use the Google engine to deliver results outside of their own directory system. With DomainIt's site submit, you are automatically submitted to Google. However, you may still want to consider submitting to Yahoo! and other paid directories, but it is not a necessity.

Yahoo! has recently introduced a 'pay for review' system whereby owners of commercial web sites must pay for a listing on Yahoo! The cost to have your site reviewed is $299 per year and you are NOT guaranteed that your site will be listed. You can find more information here.

While many other search engines have paid for inclusion services, they still offer free submissions (albeit the lead time in getting listed is a bit slower). Some of these engines that offer pay for inclusion programs include:

AltaVista's Express Inclusion
Inktomi (which provides results to MSN, AOL, and more)
Looksmart
Ask Jeeves/Teoma
Excite - Express paid inclusion to excite.

What are pay-per-click engines and how do I get listed in them?

Most pay-per-click search engines allow you to place a listing at a 'per click' fee. Generally $25 is required to setup an account. Here are some of the major pay-per-click search engines:

Overture - The biggest and most popular PPC engine, displaying results on several of the major search engines as well as in their own directory. Sign up and get a $10 credit, good towards up to 100 sales leads.
Kanoodle - A smaller, but easy to use PPC engine with lower overall bid amounts. Signup today and get $5 free just for trying them out.
Miva - Formerly known as Findwhat, Miva is an easy to use and effective PPC engine.
Spinks - Sprinks is owned by About.com. Getting listed in sprinks also allows your site to appear on About.com's guide sites.
Enhance - Formerly known as Ah-ha, Enhance provides quality traffic with bid rates as low as 1 cent.

Will I receive spam after my site is submitted to search engines and directories?
All submissions are completed using a separate, FREE email address to prevent you from receiving spam.
How do I change the description and/or keywords before the next submission?
If you would like to change your site's description, keywords, or any other information, please contact DomainIt's support department prior to you next submittal.
How do I cancel and stop my web site from appearing in search results?
Once submitted, it is not possible to remove your site from a search engine's results unless the site itself is no longer active. If you want to discontinue your multiple month service, you will need to contact DomainIt's support department.

Search Engine Optimization FAQ

How should I optimize my website with keywords?

Search engines and directories use keywords to help determine which sites to list in their search results. In optimizing your website for the search engines, you should start by making a list of several keywords that describe your site content. Ask yourself, "What would a person looking for my site enter into a search engine?" Do this for each individual page of your website because each separate page should have specific keywords that are targeted to what that particular page is about.

When making your list, you may want to try a service such as WordTracker to help you decide which keywords to use for each page. You can take their free trial and do various searches for the keywords that you have chosen to see which get more searches on the search engines. While your first instinct might tell you to pick the most popular keywords that receive the most searches, keep in mind that there is more competition to rank high in the search engines with these keywords. Look for keywords that are specific to what your page is about, rather than more general keywords.

It is very important to select keywords that are specifically related to each page of your website. These keywords are going to be used to optimize both your meta tags and your page content.

How should I optimize my website content for a niche?
Remember that you will only be able to optimize for what your website can actually handle. If your site has little or no information, it's going to be difficult to compete with other websites out there. Also, if your website is in a highly competitive category, such as travel, you'll be competing with some of the biggest companies out there such as Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, and Hotels.com. It can be difficult to rank well for these keywords that have big competition. One way to avoid this is to optimize your website for niche. For example, if you had a travel site, try to gear your content and keywords towards lesser competitive travel categories.
Meta Tags: What are they, do I need them, and how do I use them?

Meta tags are lines of code at the top of an html page that instruct search engines and give them information about your website. Some basic meta tags include:

<TITLE>Your Site Title Here</TITLE> - This tells Search Engines what the name of your site is. Often times, search engines use these titles for the title of your listing within their search results. It is very important to include keywords that describe your site within your title because some of your search engine rankings will come from this. Be sure that the title makes sense though and is not just a string of keywords.
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Your site's description here"> - This gives search engines an idea of what your site is about. Often times, search engines use the description as the description of your listing within their search results. Again, be sure to use your keywords in the description tag as well.
<META NAME="Keywords" CONTENT="Your site's keywords here."> - This gives search engines an idea of what your site is about. Though it is not as important as it once was, you should still include it in your website with several keywords, each separated by a comma.

It is highly recommended that you have the basic meta tags in place on each of your submitted url's. While these tags are not the sole source of information about your website, they are very useful in helping some of the engines determine your placement. Without them, you may not be added to a search engine or you may not rank well in those where you have already been included.

What are header tags?
Header tags are another form of html code that you can use on your website. They look like this: Insert your header here. You should have a header tag on each page of your website with the keywords that you have chosen for that page incorporated in it. For instance, this page is about optimizing your website for the search engines, so at the top of this page, we have the keyword phrase 'optimizing your website for the search engines' in a header tag. Not only does this tell users exactly what your page is about, it also emphasizes the keywords and tells the search engines that they are most important to what the website is about.
What are alt tags?
Alt tags are basically text descriptions for your images. They let search engines know what purpose an image has. It is best to use your descriptive keywords in your alt tags, while at the same time, making sure that it accurately describes your image. Alt tags look like this:
How should I optimize my website content for search engines and directories?
Incorporating your chosen keywords into your page content is even more important that putting them into your meta tags when you are optimizing your website for the search engines. After you have decided on a few keywords for each page of your website, you then need to review the text on each page and figure out how to incorporate those keywords into that page text. You should sprinkle the chosen keywords throughout the text, not just mention them one time. For instance, if you had a website about gadgets and one page was about wireless gadgets, you would then make sure that your content reflected this topic and included the phrase 'wireless gadgets' in several places. As a side note, it is very important to make sure that you have text on every page of your website as that is what the search engines 'read' to really get an idea of what your website is about. DO NOT simply list lines of keywords on your pages. If you simply list keywords on your website rather than integrating them into your text, your website could be banned from the search engines as this is considered spamming.
What are keywords and linking?

When you link to your various pages within your site, you should incorporate your keywords in the link text. By link text, we mean the following:

This is your link text. For example: Get tips for optimizing your website for the search engines,

here. Get tips for optimizing your website for the search engines here. Notice the difference? In the first example, we linked the word here to our page, but in the second example, we linked important keywords to our page. This is another way to help the search engines realize what your page is about.
How important is it to have links to my website from other websites?

This is perhaps the most important step in optimizing your website for the search engines. Many of the search engines like to see that your site is 'popular' and therefore a good resource for them to rank higher and recommend to their searchers. If they see that your page has a lot of good websites linking to it, then they assume that it is a good website and will rank you higher.

One of the best ways to help increase the number of links to your website is to exchange links with websites that have content similar to your own. Simply search for related sites in Google and then email each of them to see if they are interested in exchanging links with you. The more link exchanges that you get with quality websites, the better you will do in the search engines.

Should I use a site map?

To help search engines find every page on your website, especially if you have a large website with a lot of content, you may want to use a site map. A site map is a page within your website that contains links to every other page within your website. It is a navigational page that can be useful to your website visitors as well as help the search engine spiders to crawl throughout your website. When creating your site map, link to each page of your website using your keywords in the link text. Include a text description of each page with the link. To make your site map easily accessible, link to it from every page of your website.

How long will it take for me to rank high?
Remember that high search engine rankings do not happen overnight. After optimizing your website for the search engines and completing your search engine submission, you should begin to see your website appear in the search engines. However, it can take 1-2 months for your optimization efforts to pay off due to the time it takes for search engine spiders to properly index your site. Ranking high takes time and is unfortunately a measure beyond any search engine optimization or submission company's control.
Do I need to do anything after I achieve a high ranking?
Yes! You need to continuously add new content and update your existing content. Please keep in mind that we are not suggesting that you change the optimization that you originally did for each page. Instead, you continuously add additional pages with additional content that you have optimized. This not only gives visitors more content, thus encouraging them to come back to your website, but it encourages the search engines to rank you higher as they see your website as a useful resource for visitors. You may have heard the saying that content is king on the Internet. Well, this has never been truer.
Can you guarantee that my website will rank high in the search engines?
There are many search engine optimization companies out there that will guarantee that you will receive high rankings. Be wary of these though as it is virtually impossible to guarantee a search engine ranking. The search engines alone control the way they rank websites and these ranking rules are always changing. Because of this, we can not guarantee a high ranking. However, we will provide up to date information so that you have the best opportunity to achieve a high search engine ranking.
